Increasing road accidents! – Thinakkural Editorial

(Tamil Insight, 20 09 2008) - Health Education Secretariat reveals that more than 2500 people die annually due to accidents. The number of people that dies in accidents exceeds the number of people who die due to dengue fever.

There is not single day that passes without five accidents taking place. The problem is so severe that the handling of the problem can no longer be left in the hands of the police alone.

Roads accidents have become a global problem. This is mentioned in a report published by World Health Organization and the World Bank jointly. According to the report 12, 00, 000 people fall victims due to road accidents in the world annually. 4000 people become victims of road accidents every day.

Unprotected road transport can affect people’s health. It is said that if proper measures are not taken to control road accidents, by the year 2020, deaths due to accidents will increase by 70 percent.

Road accidents are economic burden to the Health Ministry.

Time has to show grave concern regarding road accidents.
