Karunanidhi: Sri Lanka is destroying Tamils on the pretext of fighting militants; Ramadoss: Seek U.N. help to stop war

(Tamil Insight, 18 11 2008) - “Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa government is destroying Eelam Tamil people, on the pretext of fighting militants,” DMK party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Sunday. We will not be satisfied till a ceasefire was enforced in the embattled north Sri Lanka, he told reporters in Coimbatore.

“We have made our stand clear in the party executive and also through the resolution at the all-party meeting that we want nothing short of a ceasefire and protection for the lives of innocent Tamils there. The main crux of the resolution at the all-party meeting was that there should be a ceasefire between Lankan military and the LTTE” he said.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss, talking to reporters in Vellore on Sunday urged the Centre to seek the intervention of the United Nations to stop the war affecting the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
He said that the situation in Sri Lanka had reached a turning point with the escalation of the war, and the ‘capture’ of Ponneryn, the sea-base of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, by the Sri Lankan forces.

He said that it would serve no purpose to describe those who are waging a war against the Sri Lankan military as terrorists or to describe the act as terrorism. Dr. Ramadoss said that if there has to be an end to the war in Sri Lanka, India should categorically ask Sri Lanka to enforce a ceasefire.
